The holidays have arrived and pretty soon you will see lights cascading down from houses. If you want to know how to hang Christmas lights from your roof, you should do so in a safe way. There are a number of ways that it can go wrong so be sure to inform yourself on practices to ensure a safe and happy holiday season.

Types of Christmas Lights

When you are going to hang Christmas lights from your roof by yourself, it is best to know which types of lights you have. That way, you can know how best to proceed with their installation. There are many types of Christmas lights but these three are among the most common that you will see on a roof.

Rope Light- These lights are popular for their durability and longevity and are most often placed on the edges of roofs. They consist of many small lights usually contained in a plastic tubing.

Net Lights- Net lights are a series of lights arranged in a grid. These are usually used on the tops of roofs as they are optimal for covering a large surface area.

Icicle Lights- These lights are also a popular choice for the sides of roofs. These are lights that are arranged in an icicle formation (i.e. hanging down from the roof).

Steps to Hang Christmas Lights From Your Roof

The steps to hang christmas lights from your roof can vary based on which type of lights you have so for the sake of this post, we will highlight the steps for hanging icicle and rope lights.

  1. The first thing you should do is make sure you have the necessary materials to hang up your lights. This includes a ladder, gutter or roof clips, and a staple gun (if necessary).
  2. Next, you should lay out your lights to get rid of any knots and plug them into a wall outlet to make sure all of your lights are working properly.
  3. Set up your ladder on a level surface and begin inserting your lights into the clips.
  4. Once you’ve done that, all there is left to do is turn on the lights and enjoy!

How To Stay Safe When Hanging Christmas Lights

Any project that requires a ladder has potential risks, so it is essential that you exercise proper caution to minimize the chances of injury. One of the easiest ways to do this is to always have a partner when you hang christmas lights from your roof. A partner can hold your ladder steady and feed you the excess light as you move along the roof.

When using a traditional 4 point padder, you should also never step higher than the second to last step as it can disrupt balance and lead to dangerous fall.
